An actual fern leaf as a stencil was used in conjunction with other pattern stencils to create this design, using high fired glass enamels.  Pauline collects the fern leaves and carefully dries them so that they are in tact and flat.  The leaves are placed over fire layers of base enamels, then another color of dry powder enamel is sifted over the leaf. Then very carefully the fern leaf is lifted off the piece, without spilling any dry enamel, and the negative image of the leaf remains. This is fired in a kiln @ 1450 degrees. Next the decorative colorful patterns that frame the leaf stencil are applied and the piece is fired again.  A piece like this may be fired approximately 7 times to acquire the desired affect.
